Extreme Networks Technical Brief
Enterprise Wireless LANs (WLANs) are increasingly being
deployed to access mainstream applications. One of the key
applications is to deploy Voice over Wireless LAN (VoW-
LAN) services for the mobile workforce. Worker productiv-
ity and enhanced customer service are the key drivers for
such a move. However, existing WLAN solutions have not
been able to scale in capacity and performance to enable
large scale VoWLAN deployment. In addition, VoWLAN
services demand the same level of reliability users have
come to expect from landline voice services.
With the Summit WM 4.0 release, enterprise customers can
confidently deploy large scale reliable VoWLAN services
across the network, without impacting the performance of
existing legacy data services over the same network. The
Summit WM VoWLAN solution is standards-based, which
ensures interoperability with a variety of VoWLAN handsets
and client applications. This provides customers with
extreme flexibility in designing the appropriate end user
VoWLAN solutions.
Features in 4.0 Release
VoWLAN Enhancements
The advanced VoWLAN features include the following:
Call Admission Control (CAC)
A landline voice user wishing to make a call waits for a dial
tone before dialing the number. The dial tone is a signal to
the user that the voice network is available to make a call. If
the network was extremely busy, the user would be unable
to get a dial tone for sometime.
Now transfer the same analogy to VoWLAN services.
Currently, WLAN data services are provided on a Best
Effort basis. There is usually minimal impact to the data
applications due to network latency; however a latency-
sensitive application like voice or video demands low
latency and guaranteed bandwidth across the network. In
order to ensure good quality, the network has to verify that
it has the required bandwidth and resources to accept a
voice call requiring a defined Quality of Service (QoS). If the
network has the required resources, the call is admitted.
This prevents oversubscription of network resources, which
can lead to breaking established QoS sessions, and drastic
degradation of overall performance.
The Summit WM 4.0 CAC feature is implemented per IEEE
802.11e Traffic Specifications (TSPEC). TSPEC is the traffic
stream management entity which provides the management
link between higher layer QoS protocols such as IntServ or
DiffServ with the 802.11e channel access functions. TSPEC
describes characteristics of traffic streams, such as data
rate, packet size, delay and service interval. TSPEC
negotiation between peer WLAN MAC layers provides the
mechanism for controlling admission, establishment,
adjustment and removal of traffic streams.
To initiate a call, the client sends a request to the Access
Point (AP) via ADD Traffic Stream (ADDTS) Request
<ADDTS Request> frame. The AP then decides to assign
the client to a queue, depending on several TSPEC param-
eters, such as data rate, packet size, delay and service
interval. If the requested queue is not available, it responds
with <ADDTS Deny>. If accepted AP responds with
<ADDTS Accept>. A denied client can request a call with a
lower priority service (eg. Best Effort) or query another AP
for admission to a particular queue.
With 4.0, Summit WM software allows administrators to
configure the number of clients allowed on an AP with
either voice or video priorities. Clients that do not support
CAC can still be associated with the AP for best effort
service. Therefore, it makes sense to put “intelligent” clients
that support CAC on a separate Access Domain from clients
that do not support CAC. Figure 1 shows an example of
CAC feature operation.
